TOUR OVERVIEW

Stara Gora represents the central pilgrimage site of Venetian Slovenia. The church has been rebuilt several times throughout history. In response to Turkish raids, the sanctuary and monastery were fortified with defensive walls, which have been preserved and still surround the site today.

Your visit includes the Sexton’s House, chapel, crypt, church, and several historic rooms, each revealing stories that have shaped this sacred hill for over a thousand years. Tours begin at the former Sexton’s House, located at the entrance to the sanctuary village between the two historic gates.

Meaningful is the warm welcome of Slovenian pilgrims, with services, information, and even confession available in the Slovenian language.

Guided tours for individuals and groups are available during opening hours. A meaningful experience for pilgrims, history lovers, and curious travellers alike.

The earliest written Slovene texts (Brižinski spomeniki) are found in the Freising Manuscripts (972–1039). They were discovered in Freising and are preserved today in Germany (Munich).

They were followed by the Klagenfurt (Rateški rokopis) Manuscript (1362–1390), which is kept in Austria, the Stična Manuscript (1428–1440), preserved in Slovenia, and the Starogorski Manuscript from 1492, kept in Italy in Stara Gora near Slovenia.
