Divje babe Archaeological Park - It was here that the archaeologists discovered numerous traces of Ice Age life, including stone and bone tools, prehistoric fireplaces, and the famous Neanderthal flute.
Today Divje babe Archaeological Park offers modern visitor experience with digital interpretation. Projections provide an unique insight into the historical layers that reveal life during the Ice Age and relive the mysterious world of the Neanderthals and the creation of the world's oldest musical instrument.
This remarkable Paleolithic site is fascinating for its history with the oldest musical instrument and for the many other discoveries. From the bones of more than 60 animal species, for example cave bear, to stone and bone tools and the remains of Neanderthal fire pits that tell the story of the lives of our ancestors.

TOUR OVERVIEW

Guided tours of the Divje babe Archaeological Park are offered from April 15th to October 15th.

Approximately 2 hours, the guided tour includes a visit to the digitalized cave and the archaeological park.

- Children from 6 to 15 years: € 9 (individual) or € 7 (groups of 20+).
- Adults: €12 (individual) or €10 (groups of 20+).
- School groups (pupils, students): € 7.
- Small groups (up to 5 persons): € 60.

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

- The cave is relatively small, but the temperature is constant throughout the year, ranging from approximately 8 to 15 °C.
LOCATION
The Divje babe Archaeological Park is located on the Šebrelje Plateau, which lies in the landscape of the Idrija and Cerkno Hills in Slovenia.
PARKING
How to reach the meeting point with the guide and where to park?
There are two paths leading to the cave:
1. Path from the village of Šebrelje
Parking: Visitors can park in the center of the village of Šebrelje, which is accessible by car. Parking near the church of St. Ivan (St. John the Baptist) is not allowed as it is a protected area.
Walking path: From the village of Šebrelje to the meeting point at the church of St. Ivan, it is a 2.2 km walk (approximately 30 minutes). The meeting point for guided tours is at the church of St. Ivan. Return to the parking area is along the same path.
2. Path from the village of Reka
Parking: You can park in the valley by the Idrijca River in the settlement of Reka, at a designated parking area located past the bridge over the river (on the right side of the river).
Walking path: Follow the mule trail that ascends high above the Idrijca River to the church of St. Ivan (the meeting point with the guide). The path is easy, marked, and suitable for children aged 5 and older.
- Walking time: 1 hour 30 minutes.
- Elevation gain: 326 m.
- At certain points, the path is partially exposed, so caution is advised.
Route description: From the parking area, follow the road past the last house, then take the cart track to the meadow, and from there, follow the narrow marked trail along the cliffs to the church of St. Ivan.
Return: Circular route via the forest path back to the starting point (return time: 40 minutes).
Note: Appropriate hiking gear is required for both paths, especially for the longer trail from Reka.
USEFUL INFORMATION

- Then you need to reach the cave: walking time to the cave: 15-20 minutes in one direction, distance: 500 meters one way, altitude difference: 120 meters.
- Tours are only possible with a guide and by prior arrangement at least 3 working days before the visit.
- During summer can be very hot, the way is exposed to the sun.
- The archaeological site can be approached from two directions. Visitors can access the cave either from the top of the Šebrelje Plateau, descending via a slightly more challenging but well-secured path starting at the Church of St. Ivan. The longest way is from the village of Reka down in the valley, ascending the mule track to the Church of St. Ivan before descending to the Divje Babe cave.
TIMELY RESERVATION: We would like to request that all individual visits and groups, especially of school children, are booked and notified on time and in advance at least seven days before the desired visit and that the difficulty of the program is discussed with the management. Because of the descent and the visit to the cave, comfortable clothes and sport shoes are mandatory.
Visitors under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian.

LIMITATIONS
A simple description of the difficulty of accessing the cave:
- good physical fitness,
- a natural cave with artificial paths.
- due to the steep, but protected stairs, the descent into the cave can be difficult for some visitors.
The cave is closed to visitors outside the opening season.
